Five strategies. One Process.

Hedge Funds

Obsidian SCI* Multi Asset Retail Hedge Fund

*SCI = Sanlam Collective Investments.

Strategy: As the name suggests, this hedge fund can invest across asset classes, both locally and offshore. It is classified as a Worldwide Fund, which means there are no limits in terms of how much of the portfolio can be invested offshore. Adding to this flexibility is the funds mandate to go ‘short’ assets we think are going to fall in price. Active stock selection and asset allocation are combined.

Suitable for: This fund is appropriate for investors looking for long-term wealth creation. Diversification, both across asset classes and geographies, and protection during weak markets, are the defining characteristics of the fund.

Obsidian SCI* Long Short Retail Hedge Fund

*SCI = Sanlam Collective Investments.

Strategy: This is an equity centric hedge fund with a global mandate. It is has a Worldwide classification so there are no limits in terms of how much of the portfolio can be invested offshore. Think of this an equity fund that can go ‘short’ shares we think are going to fall in price. It will generally have a long bias, using the ‘short’ positions as protection and an additional source of alpha.

Suitable for: Investors looking for equity exposure with the added benefit of downside protection will find this fund appropriate. A longer investment horizon and healthy risk appetite are both necessary as equity remains the dominant asset class in this fund.

Multi Asset Funds

Obsidian SCI* Balanced Fund

*SCI = Sanlam Collective Investments.

Strategy: This fund is allowed to invest across different asset classes, both locally and offshore. Our job is to weight the portfolio toward the asset classes we think are likely to perform best, also known as the asset allocation decision. Investing across several asset classes means that diversification is a key characteristic of this fund.

Suitable for: This is a Regulation 28 compliant fund and is therefore suitable for retirement savings. An investment horizon of more than 5-years is appropriate, and investors should share our belief in the power of active stock selection and asset allocation.

Obsidian SCI* Worldwide Flexible Fund

*SCI = Sanlam Collective Investments.

Strategy: The portfolio will be actively managed with exposure to various asset classes, both domestic and internationally, being varied to reflect changing economic and market circumstances to maximise returns for investors. The Manager may also invest in listed and unlisted financial instruments as allowed by the Act from time to time. The portfolio may also invest in participatory interests of underlying unit trust portfolios

Suitable for: An investor seeking a diversified portfolio of global assets which could, at times, include SA assets. The fund can experience periods of relative volatility especially as it is a ZAR based fund. The investor should have a long-term investment horizon 3-5 years.

Building Block Funds

Obsidian SCI* Equity Fund

*SCI = Sanlam Collective Investments.

Strategy: This equity fund has a global mandate, actively investing in companies that satisfy the criteria of our in-house stock selection process. That process is primarily concerned with finding shares with attractive valuation where the environment in which the business operates will be supportive going forward.
Suitable for: Equity only investment vehicles generally have more upside potential than multi asset funds, but also come with more variable returns. A 7-year investment horizon with a reasonable risk appetite is therefore recommended.

Suitable for: This fund is appropriate for investors looking for long-term wealth creation. Diversification, both across asset classes and geographies, and protection during weak markets, are the defining characteristics of the fund.
